When deciding about my high school path, my plan to study at a medical school didn’t quite work out. Luckily, there was a new project starting at that time, which determined my future at the 1st International School of Ostrava (ISO). I must admit that I struggled at the very beginning but all the hard work paid off, especially after being given the opportunity to study a BSc programme in the University of Glamorgan (UK) and the subsequent doctorate. All of these decisions have contributed to who and where I am today. If it weren’t for all the support of Phil Corkill and Jana Kotasova, my life would have most probably been completely different now.
To my delight I have recently started working as a lecturer in psychology at University of South Wales (UK). I’m also currently in the final year of my doctorate in the area of developmental psychology. Doing a PhD has enabled me to teach on a wide spectrum of psychological subjects at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Additionally, I have gained experience working on research projects, one of them being conducted on behalf of the Welsh Government.
If I was to briefly describe my 4 years spent at ISO, where I came to study along with other 15 students as the very first intake group of pupils, I would describe it as a period of fantastic friendships, hard work, amazing atmosphere, great personal development, valuable contact building (which will last a lifetime), unforgettable memories and most importantly, a stepping stone to the rest of the world.
Without the experiences gained at ISO, I do not believe I would be where I am today. I feel so lucky to be working in a job I adore, finishing my doctorate in a field I’m passionate about and being surrounded by people that have always given 100% support to me. In addition, I have a fantastic view of the valleys from the window of our house – what more can I possibly ask for!
All this was possible thanks to my parents’ encouragement and the idea to establish a high school, which would broaden the students’ horizons and offer them exceptional educational opportunities. It’s amazing to see the strong will, hard work, and the collaboration between ISO staff and students who facilitate the continuing development and growth of the school. I hope that your years spent at ISO will be as fulfilling and inspirational for you as they were for myself.
