Youth in Action Developments | 2009-12-07

In previous years the 1st ISO has been delighted to participate in a number of Youth in Action international and cultural exchanges both in the Czech Republic and abroad. The month of April 2008 has brought some exciting developments for our school and its expanding involvement with the Youth in Action Programme.

During the first week of April this year, 1st ISO teachers Ivo Helebrant and Anthony Bullman were invited by Sr. Gabrielle McManus to a week long training course in Athelone, Ireland. The training course was designed to help foster new partnerships between participating organisations in other countries and more importantly, to develop the organisations’ capacities to host their own Youth in Action meetings.

What does this mean for our school? In the short term, it has meant a number of our students have already been invited to attend International Meetings in Lithuania and Belarus, while further invitations are expected from Ireland, Russia, the Ukraine and Turkey. Four students, (yet to be selected) will be going to Lithuania in July with Lindsey Howes to participate in the “Break Barriers” International Meeting. They will meet with students from France, Cyprus, Ireland and Poland to discuss relations between youth and senior citizens. Another seven students will travel to Belarus in September to look at issues related to education in the future.

The long-term aims for the school within the Youth in Action Programme include: more International Meetings abroad and excitedly, hosting our own International Meetings here in Ostrava! It is hoped that we will be able to host two meetings in 2009, with young people joining us from across Europe. We look forward to bringing you further updates!
